Search for your own site and find nothing? Before assuming the worst, run this check. The cause is usually mundane and fixable within a day.

First, test indexing properly

Search Google for site:yourdomain.com. If results appear, you are indexed and the issue is ranking, not visibility. If nothing appears, the site is not in the index at all, and the next section is for you.

Why a site is not indexed

  • It is brand new. Without links or a submitted sitemap, discovery can take weeks. Submit the sitemap in Search Console and request indexing of key pages.
  • noindex tags or robots.txt blocks. Common after launches, when staging settings ship to production.
  • The domain carries history. Expired domains with past spam can start in a deep hole.
  • Severe technical barriers: the site renders nothing without JavaScript, or every URL errors.

Indexed but invisible: the ranking gap

Most owners who say they are not on Google are indexed but ranking on page five. That is a competition problem with a known cure:

  1. Target searches you can realistically win first: specific services, locations and questions rather than one giant head term.
  2. Make each important page genuinely the best answer: depth, proof, structure and speed.
  3. Build internal links from related content, and earn a handful of real external links.
  4. Set up your Google Business Profile if you serve local customers; the map pack is often the fastest visibility.

Branded searches deserve a special check

If even your business name finds nothing, confirm the exact spelling is on every page, the Organization structured data is present, and no older business dominates the same name. Branded visibility usually arrives quickly once indexing is healthy.

Frequently asked questions

How long until a new website shows on Google?

With a submitted sitemap and a few pages of real content, indexing typically happens within days. Competitive rankings take months; visibility for your brand name should come quickly.

Does paying for Google Ads help my site get indexed or rank?

No. Ads and organic results are completely separate systems. Ads buy immediate visibility; they have no effect on organic indexing or position.

Why does my site show for its name but not for my services?

Brand searches have no competition; service searches have plenty. You rank for your name by existing, but for services you must out-earn established competitors with content, relevance and links.
